Full Text

Many are the complaints that are daily heaped by the traveling public upon the long continued tardiness of the Northern Pacific railroad trains, and more especially those from the west. It is no doubt a great inconvenience and annoyance but yet the public should take a retrospective view and consider that but two years ago they were not the possessors of the even uncertain rapid transit of to-day. They were not then offered the accommodation nor luxury that is now presented by the costly and palatial coaches that now speed across the iron pathway which traverses the western prairies. But in all this the abuse and maledictions that they give vent to against the railroad is but unjust and avail the traveling grumbler but little. The whole trouble lies with the elements which continue to shower upon the earth the flaky impediment and have not been impartial to the mountain district of the Northern Pacific. The trains that now reach this city from the west are made up in Helena as fast as the number of travelers arriving at the territorial capital from the slope warrants such action. If the weather bureau sees fit to visit the railroad with a blanket of the beautiful such as will obstruct the pathway of the iron horse and prevent its arrival on schedule time it is not to be presumed the railway officials will cuss, because the small amount of travel between Helena and Miles City, important as it is, does not warrant the dispatching of a special train to accommodate a few eastern drummers and western malcontents.
