Caterpillars-
Hordes of 'Em,
Tie Up Trains

NEWPORT, Ore., June 12.-Coming from no one knows where but arriving in multitudes and mobs, a new host of caterpillars today descended upon Newport and piled up on the railroad track connecting this district with the outside.

Not content with eating all the crops, toll reaves and other vegetation in the Yaquina Valley the fuzzy pests seem intent on preventing the railroad from hauling anything in for local residents to eat.

Southern Pacific officials and members of the engineering department are inspecting the situation, endeavoring to devise a scheme for clearing the road bed. Attempts to sweep the caterpillars from the track with brooms have been abandoned. The mass of wriggling worms is too heavy to yield to such treatment.

Railroad officials plan to try creosote, spraying the track for some distance on either side of the rails, in hopes the worms won't be able to stand the treatment. If creosote has no effect, poison gas may be used.
