BREACH GROWS WIDER
Split Among Cache Republicans More Open.

HAMMOND MAKES A PLEA
GOES TO HIS OLD HOME TO TALK PEACE.

As the days go by the disaffection in the Republican party of Cache county grows more and more painfully apparent. Now James T. Hammond is assisting Arthur Pratt in promoting strife. Mr. Hammond is the ex-favorite son of Cache county. He is so popular up there that he ran 500 votes behind Judge King in the special election. It was quite in line with the Republican methods of running this campaign that Mr. Hammond should be sent by the powers to help Arthur out.

One result of their work was made apparent yesterday. George Q. Rich of Logan, well known attorney, had been nominated for county attorney. Perhaps he was sore because he was not nominated for district attorney in the district convention. At any rate he declined to accept the nomination tendered him. The county committee welcomed the opportunity for a man to take his place when Pratt is not to fill any vacancy yet awhile. He then began laboring with Rich. Then Hammond appeared on the scene. Both between them persuaded him to go on the ticket. When asked to assign a reason for his sudden change he said, "Well, they got after me and I decided to stay on the ticket."

High-Handed Interference.

A large sized proportion of Cache county Republicans resent the high handed interference in their affairs by the Salt Lake crowd. "It looks like a taste of imperialism right here at home," said one of the kickers. "Cache county isn't big enough to nominate a ticket of its own and keep it in the field, and if we have to pull off every man the Salt Lake gang doesn't like, then I for one am ready to walk out of the party."

The chief mission of Hammond to Cache, it is stated, is to pour oil on the troubled waters. Mr. Hammond had heard of the intense feeling engendered by the action of Pratt in forcing Commissioners Muir and Meikle off the ticket. But as a peacemaker the affable secretary of state is not proving a howling success. Indeed, word comes from Cache that the breach is widening.

Democrats are now predicting a majority of at least 1,200 and some of them say this estimate is far too low. Hardly a Republican can be found who has any serious hope of keeping the Democratic majority under 1,000.
