Full Text

The ticket for the national election contains four sets of electors, the democratic, republican, progressives and socialists. The prohibition party has failed to name electors in this state.

The democratic electors are E. C. Sharpe, Walter Sillers, W. Alfred Bean, Thomas E. Pegram, J. B. Mitchell, I. T. Blount, John H. Dorris, W. H. Cook, W. B. Mixon, R. E. Spivey. Vote for ten.

The ticket also contains three amendments to the constitution.

The first of these relates only to the style of all bills which shall be presented to the legislature.

The second seeks to amend section 31 of the constitution as follows:

Sec. 31. The right of trial by jury shall remain inviolate, but the legislature may, by enactment, provide that in all civil suits tried in the circuit or chancery courts, nine or more jurors may agree on the verdict, and return it as the verdict of the jury.

The above amendment will effect a radical change in the old system of jury service where the unanimous consent of twelve good and lawful men is required to bring in a verdict. The change, however, is regarded by the best lawyers as safe and desirable and should go through.

It is claimed by those who have studied the question of the amendment providing for the initiative and referendum that the resolution was submitted in such form as to make it invalid on account of an error on the part of the legislature, should the people adopt it by their votes at the polls on November 5th.

A majority of all the votes cast in the election must be cast for each amendment to insure its adoption.
