That the world is not absolutely given over to mammon is proved by the refusal of the trustees of St. Paul's Chapel, New York City—which, like Old Trinity, occupies a valuable site on Broadway in the heart of the business section—to sell the property to a business syndicate for $5,000,000. And the refusal was not on the ground that the offer was insufficient, but that the property would not be sold at any price. This is sentiment, it is true, but it is right. In the old cities of Europe, notably London, are ancient churches that, while surrounded by the whirl of business, are still devoted to the purposes that led to their erection.
The historic records of these old churches are worth far more than any possible element of commercialism.
Long may Old Trinity and St. Paul's remain as they are in New York City.
