MR. STANLY.—This gentleman, a very popular member of the Legislature of North Carolina, and Speaker of the House of Commons, was recently, whilst speaking on a bill before the Joint Committee of both Houses, suddenly attacked with a fainting fit, and before he could conclude his remarks, was obliged to apologise to the Chairman for his inability to go on; and calling for a glass of water, feebly resumed his seat. On discovering his situation, a member moved for an adjournment; but as the House could not legally dissolve, when the Speaker was absent from the Chair, he was borne to it by the members, when the House adjourned. From thence he was conveyed to his lodgings, when paralysis took place, which so affected his right side and tongue, that he was unable to resume his duties.

By the last advices, received from North Carolina, we are gratified to learn, that the honorable gentleman has partially recovered; and the following paragraph selected from the Raleigh Register, gives us reason to hope that he will ultimately be returned to his usual health and ability:

Mr. Stanly.—It is with sincere pleasure we state, that this gentleman has so far recovered from the distressing attack which threatened to prostrate not only his physical powers, but to annihilate the faculties of his mind, as to be able to leave here on Wednesday last for Newbern.—The paralysis of his left side still continues, but the improvement of his general health is such as to inspire his friends with the hopes of its entire restoration.

Mr. Stanley is a gentleman of more than ordinary powers of mind, and has received the advantages of a finished education. Designed by nature, to hold an enviable rank among men, and to do honour to his native state, it was hoped and expected, that he would, at no distant day, be put in possession of that influence, which his high attributes ought ever to command.

The heavy hand of an All-Ruling Providence has, however, visited him, and it is feared, he will never be enabled to resume that station in life, which appears to have been marked out for him by nature, and that he will, though young, be cut off from the enjoyment of that applause, which his talents were certain to secure. His immediate constituents, if they lose his services, will sustain a shock not easily mastered, and will have cause to lament the loss of a man, who, in the prime of life, was taken to the shades of retirement.
