Full Text

Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Philadelphia, dated October 5.

The enemy, it is generally believed, will leave New York this fall, and send considerable reinforcements to the West Indies, &c. I doubt their leaving New York. They have come into Jersey about ten days ago. Foraging and destroying was their intention, to which they have succeeded. They came as far as Hackinsack, near which they surrounded our friend Col. Bayler's detachment, and have taken above 20 of his horse and men prisoners, some officers, amongst which, I am afraid, is the Col. himself and Major Clow.

I wrote you a few days ago, to which refer. I am sorry to say our friend Col. Baylor, and Major Clow, are no more. Both are said to be dead of their wounds. Many of our men were put to death after they surrendered.
