"GO WEST, YOUNG MAN."

The advice of Horace Greeley to the young men of the country to "Go West" has served as the subject of much good natured ridicule, but it was good counsel. The stream of Western emigration has steadily increased during the last few years, and now, not only the bone and sinew of the country, its honest and ambitious poverty and its youth and strength "go West," but the sick and feeble, the representatives of its wealth, and its middle and old age go in the same direction. It is the field to which all eyes are turned, and on its camping grounds the people of the future will fight the battle of life. Of the immense western territory of the United States, now waiting for the hand of civilization and all its arts, to make it blossom like the rose, no locality attracts as much attention, or more emigration than the territory of Colorado. It has a superb climate, owing to its elevation above the level of the sea, its least altitude being four thousand feet, its highest fourteen thousand feet; in its vast area of one hundred and six thousand square miles, 'there is not a pond of stagnant water, miasma is unknown and malaria cannot come.' Naturally it is one of the healthiest portions of the country. Its supplies of water are pure, clean and inexhaustible, and its soil remarkably fertile. Grain and all kinds of vegetables, yield large crops of a quality equal to those of many of the states and territories, and superior to many. The Colorado mines are no doubt among the richest in the world. Gold, silver, copper, lead, iron, and coal are to be found within her limits in greater or less quantities.

To the emigrant, the Southwestern colony of Colorado offers peculiar inducements. He may take a homestead claim of a hundred and sixty acres, which by becoming a member of the colony, he may locate inside the irrigating canals which gives value at once to the land. His land will be situated within a few miles of a railroad line, and all members of the colony are entitled to colonization rates of transportation for himself and family. The colony is situated on the South Platte river, is twenty-five miles east of the Greeley colony, and only fifty miles northeast of Denver city. For all information interesting to emigrants or those contemplating a removal to Colorado, we refer the reader to Bristol & Stillwell of this city, agents of the Southwestern colony.
