Newton, Oct. -- Confusion in an old-time joint discussion Saturday night among Republicans resulted in the western part of the county, when W. C. Feimster, candidate for the house on the Democratic ticket, and Charles A. Jonas of Lincolnton, candidate for the senate on the Republican ticket, thundered their arguments to a crowd that could not get inside the big building, while the delighted yells of their respective rooters rent the quiet country-side. It was the only joint debate of the campaign and will perhaps remain the only one, for it is very likely that the net profit to each party is nearer zero than any other figure. The audience was about 50-50 when the battle began and it was just about that when it was over.
Each speaker did his part nobly and the rooters did theirs. Many ladies attended and the entertainment lasted until 10:30.
Aubrey L. Brooks delivered a fine talk at Catawba yesterday and made one of the best speeches of the fair meeting in North Newton. He is to be followed later by Page, Webb, Overman, Morrison, Glenn and other big guns.
