Philadelphia, May 18.-(By the Associated Press)-Representative William Vare, running on a platform for prohibition modification, led his opponents for the Republican nomination for United States senator from Pennsylvania in returns tonight from 3,752 districts out of 8,281 in the state in today's primary election.
Senator George Wharton Pepper, candidate led by drys, ran second, with Governor Pinchot, independent dry third. Mr. Vare's plurality over Senator Pepper was 73,952.
This vote included more than half of Philadelphia, the Vare stronghold, which was conceded by the other candidates to give the representative a substantial plurality. Senator Pepper based his hopes on the Allegheny section and western Pennsylvania, while governor looked for his greatest strength in the rural counties and the mining regions.
Included in this vote were 418 districts in Allegheny county of which Pittsburgh is a part and these showed Senator Pepper running ahead there. In scattering returns from the larger hard coal counties and in some of the agricultural districts the governor was in first place.
The vote of the 3,572 districts was Vare 331,392; Pepper 237,440; Pinchot 146,219. All three candidates were waiting more complete figures before making statement.
Both of the leading candidates for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, Edward Beidleman, former lieutenant governor, supported by the Vare forces, and John S. Fisher, former state banking commissioner, backed by the Mellon group, ran closely with the heads of the ticket. The other gubernatorial candidates, Representative Thomas W. Phillips, Jr. and John K. Tener, former governor, were in third and fourth places. The vote of 3,452 districts gave Beidleman 314,158; Fisher 252,713; Phillips 26,248; Tener 16,352.
