The returns from this State are yet but partial and incoherent. From the following, however, we see that the Globe policy of opposing 'regular nominations' has extended beyond the mountains:
From the Cleveland (O.) Plaindealer.
For the first time in many years the Democrats of this county had a certain prospect of electing a good ty portion of their ticket. Ever since the great 'coon hunt' in 1840, our opponents have been sinking under a growing weakness, and our success this year, under ordinary circumstances, was more than probable. All that was wanting to seal our triumph was a reasonable share of activity, and a firm fidelity to the regularly nominated candidates! In the latter we have been sadly disappointed, and with shame we record it, that Democrats were seen in the streets of Cleveland on the day of election, opposing by their votes and their influence the regularly nominated Democratic ticket! This was an open insult to every Democrat in the county, and a foul stigma upon the cause.
For what use was it that delegates should assemble in convention from all parts of the county, and put in nomination a ticket to be defeated by a few factionists, who choose to make personal issues with some of the candidates?
It is enough to contend against the overwhelming Whig majority here, without being compelled to guard against the dark thrusts of pretended friends. Democrats, if elected at all, are so, by very small majorities; and if any one is disposed to wreak vengeance upon a particular candidate for any imaginary or real personal differences, he can do so; but will the democracy of the county tolerate so dangerous and disorganizing a precedent? Is not the time and place to settle personal preferences as to candidates in the convention which nominates them, and is it not Democratic to yield all such preferences to the majority, and support the ticket, the WHOLE TICKET, and NOTHING BUT THE TICKET?
This principle of unity has led the Democracy of the Reserve on, from a little handful, to a great, growing, and powerful party; and now, just as we are about to grasp the trophies of victory and reap the reward of twelve years' toil, Faction rears its Hydra head, and we are thrown back into the iron embrace of Whiggery!
We write this 'more in sorrow than in anger,' and we believe that every true-hearted Democrat sincerely regrets it. We say with the poet—
'Let Whigs delight to bark and bite,
For God has made them so;
And let the Clay men growl and fight,
For 'tis their nature too;
But Democrats, you should not let
Your angry passions rise;
Your stout strong hands were never made
To bung each other's eyes!'
