Thirty Pupils Enroll For Band Instruction

Over 30 students enrolled yesterday for the summer school in band instruction which is now underway at New Hanover High school, according to Richard Dobson, instructor.

Registration, open to all students who have reached the fifth grade, will be continued through this week, Dobson said, but no registration will be accepted after Friday.

Lt. Eugene Lacock, ROTC band director, is also instructing in the summer school.

Classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced students are to be held Monday through Friday in the Vocational building at the school for a five week term.

It is not necessary for a student to remain for the complete three hours, it was said.

Advanced students will be organized into a complete band, it was said, though principal emphasis in the instruction shall be on fundamentals so that students will have an opportunity to improve, Dobson said.

Dobson has been away for the past year studying music instruction, and the latest methods of teaching band instruments will be used at the school.

The classes will afford an opportunity for students to receive training so that they may join the ROTC high school band, Lt. Lacock said. In addition, it is planned to organize a uniformed junior high school band next year, and those entering the summer session will probably be those participating in the band, it was said.

Tuition for the five weeks has been set at $12. Those who do not own instruments may rent them from the school for $2 for the summer term.
