Full Text
A handsome walking dress has the skirt and double-breasted jacket of light brown Amazon cloth; the jacket is strapped and machine stitched round the edge, and is fastened by horn buttons.
The hat that accompanies this costume is of brown velvet, trimmed with shaded brown feathers and brown ribbon velvet; a puffing of turquoise velvet is placed under the turned-up brim at the left side.
Speaking of hats, a very chic affair is of black velvet with a rather wide brim very much upturned on the left side. All round the edge of the brim full velvet is sewn, arranged in loose folds; at intervals a tiny heading is formed by means of a double runner, through which a wire is inserted about 3 inches long. This is done before it is sewn on the brim; the runners thus wired are lightly sewn outside and underneath the edge of the brim, so that the fulness comes over the edge and forms a soft trimming all round. The same arrangement of velvet appears round the top of the crown, a trifle wider than that round the brim; below a full, carelessly folded band of velvet passes round the base. The left side trimming consists of graceful ostrich plumes, two white and two black, with a large steel buckle, and a loose knot of velvet to conceal the stems. A double frill of ribbon trims the bandeau underneath.
