For President
ALTON B. PARKER.
Of New York.
For Vice President.
HENRY G. DAVIS.
Of West Virginia.
SILLY, VICIOUS AND CONTEMPTIBLE.
The Silver County convention of Ormsby county adopted the following as one of its planks in its platform:
"That we heartily endorse the nomination of that convention of Hon. John Sparks for the office of U. S. Senator, believing that in such a citizen and builder of the commonwealth we will be represented at Washington by a man whose personal integrity is without reproach and in whose honorable character as a representative the people of Nevada can always take excusable pride.
We pledge our legislative nominees to his support."
The Carson News, in an ill-natured and extremely silly criticism of the resolution, lays particular stress upon the "personal integrity" portion of the same, the truth of which it admits, and after a paragraph of scurilous remarks relative to Governor Sparks closes with the following:
"We will make a present of $5.00 to any reader of this paper who can point out a single qualification John Sparks possesses to fill any office within the gift of the people from the United States Senatorship down to Constable.."
So according to the News' estimate "personal integrity" cuts no figure in the summary of qualifications for public office.
If it does not, then of course we relinquish all claim to the offered prize, but if it does we claim the $5 upon the News' own admission.
But how miserable and contemptible must the above paragraph sound to the people of Nevada, nearly all of whom, irrespective of party, acknowledge that Governor Sparks' administration has been the most successful and signalized by fewer mistakes than any that has been in power since the admission of Nevada into the union.
We would wish the News a much larger than its present limited circulation if it would continue the same character of warfare against Senator Sparks, for it would show to what straits the opposition is driven to avert what they feel in their hearts to be inevitable-the election of stalwart John Sparks to the United States Senatorship of Nevada.
The Journal has made no disparaging remarks concerning Mr. George S. Nixon, the Republican candidate for United States Senator, and has hoped that the contest, (if it can be called a contest) would be conducted with a decent regard for the amenities of political discussion and methods.
But if it is to be otherwise the Journal has a whole bucket full of bird shot suitable for small game, with which it could render extremely uncomfortable for the gentleman who a few weeks before his announcement as a Republican candidate, declared his intention of running, if at all, on the Democratic or Fusion ticket.
Like thousands of others in the State we have regarded Mr. Nixon's candidacy as a farce, and it would be in sorrow more than anger were we provoked to attack him as we would a candidate who is really a nominee for United States Senator.-Journal.
