With 11 Indians--10 Papagos and 1 Kiowa--taking part, the San Xavier Hospital entry won the grand sweepstakes award Feb. 19 in the 34th annual Rodeo Parade held at Tucson, the opening event of the Fiesta de los Vaqueros.
Those on the float were Mrs. Gladys Davenport, a practical nurse at the hospital, as the mother. Miss Mary Ascencio, also a practical nurse at San Xavier, appeared as the attending nurse. Mrs. Lucy Pablo, Mrs. Alice Narcho, Mrs. Seraphine Antone, all nurses' aides at San Xavier, were on the float as were Bernardine and Georgine Felix. Nicholas Moreno was the driver. Outriders were Fred Barcello and Joseph Moreno and small son Darnell. Alonzo Moreno is the owner of the team, and Albert Frank is the owner of the wagon used.
The float was mounted on one of the old Papago wagons now rapidly disappearing from use. Entitled "From Home to Hospital," the back section depicted a mother in a hospital bed, with her baby in a bassinet. This contrasted with the front section of the float showing a typical reservation ramada. The entry was praised for its authenticity, naturalness, and human appeal. More than 90,000 persons saw the parade.
