In the Mayor's Court of this city, on the 26th ultimo, Miss Sally Edsal received eight hundred dollars damages, and costs, of Thomas Devine, in an action of slander, for that the wife of said Devine (a half sister of the plaintiff) had reported, that the plaintiff had committed prostitution with her uncle and guardian. A most detestable scene of perjury and bribery was developed on the trial, which lasted three days. Upwards of forty witnesses were examined; when the jury gave the above verdict, which they declared was mitigated, in consideration of the situation of Devine, who was brought into this difficulty by the extremely shameful and scandalous conduct of his wife; and who was answerable for her misconduct. Mr. Bogardus, counsel for plaintiff, Messrs. Price and Hildreth, for defendant. The jury who tried the cause, gave a certificate, declaring the words by Devine's wife to be false and malicious, and that the character of Miss Edsal was that of a worthy, deserving and innocent female. The parties belong to Newton, on Staten Island.
