The growing Foppery of the Nation;
Has made, at length, such Proclamation,
Our public News is well supply'd
With Observations on their Pride.
But Wonders rise still more and more,
When we behold our Fops (before)
Turn'd Satirists against the Trade,
Which they with Diligence have made!
But Poets need not rack their Brain
This short Enigma to explain:
For as the Thief, who hugs the Post,
Lamenting much his Honor lost,
Is always certain to declaim,
Against the Roguery of that Name.
So doth the Fop--to blind our Eyes,
His own Exploits he'll satirize.
A late OBSERVER, hath prepar'd
An ample Subject for the Bard:
Desires that ev'ry Railer's Wit
Upon the OBSERVER'S Head may hit;
And every Writer's piercing Art,
Might point the Satire like a Dart,
At him whose Actions all declare
A rakish Turn, and foppish Air,
Perhaps our Author's Mind consulted,
Taught him from whence those Arts resulted,
By which, Experience (made a Law)
Learn'd him his Character to draw:
If this be true, his Skill we praise,
With num'rous Words, and lofty Lays.
* Under the Observation of Debauchery and Foppery: The latter Part of the last Observation upon Fops, viz. Here then is a Subject for your Wit, &c.
