Agencies Refuse Fund Aid

United Fund officials today announced they have again invited the Heart Association of Greater Miami and the American Cancer Society, Dade County Unit, to become members of the United Fund.

The fund also offered to finance both organizations for 1958 if they will forego their drives this year.

James I. Keller, Jr., chairman of the UF's Admissions Committee, said he has contacted both Dr. Jim S. Jewett, president of the Heart Association, and John S. Chowning, president of the Cancer Society, offering to sit down with their boards to work out adequate financing plans for this year from funds raised for the cause of Heart and Cancer in the recently completed UF drive.

"As stated in the press, the United Fund campaign has been successfully concluded with a securing of cash and pledges in excess of our goal," Keller told each group. "The United Fund is therefore in a position to assure your agency that its reasonable needs for the ensuing year can be met."

Keller stated that the United Fund was only concerned about two principal points. "First, the United Fund feels that funds can best be secured to support the reasonable needs of all private health and welfare agencies through one campaign at a great savings in manpower and campaign costs.

"Second, the United Fund maintains that the contributors, through appropriate committees representing a cross section of our citizens, should review the needs of all agencies to see that the money raised can be wisely spent on an appropriate program and to see that Dade County's share of national budgets is allocated on a fair basis which takes into account the peculiar problems involved in the development of all such agencies in our county," Keller said.

Both the Heart Association and the Cancer Society were invited to join the United Fund last Summer. After meetings with the Admissions Committee both groups stated they could not join due to national and/or local board policies.
