AFL Session Opens Today; Lewis Issue

Boston, Oct. 4 - INS - The 63rd annual convention of the American Federation of Labor started with a round of portentous speeches today while John L. Lewis' application to return to the AFL threatened to burst into a lusty, verbal brawl.

William Green, federation president, opened the 10-day conclave with his annual address. He was armed beforehand with figures intended to prove that production front casualties - those killed or injured in war factories - were heavier than those suffered by the armed forces to date.

Others scheduled to speak to the 600 AFL delegates included Under Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson and Governor Leverett Saltonstall, the latter the Bay state's own favorite son candidate for the GOP presidential nomination.

That provided the high spots of the program of the first day; but these AFL conventions, which often have seen fisticuffs, always start quietly to build up into a crescendo of explosive action in their final days.

The stage for the convention was set when the Federation's powerful executive council met throughout the week end to draft its annual report to the convention.

The council studiously refrained from taking a stand on the Lewis controversy. It merely noted that Lewis' and the 650,000 members of the United Mine Workers wanted to come back to the AFL.

It threw the issue on the convention floor "without recommendation for its consideration and action."
