Event Details
The populace of Toulouse rose on account of the dearness of corn. They assembled in the market place, and the corn merchants took refuge in their houses. The capitouls, or chief magistrates, attempted to appease the tumult, which they were only able to do, upon promising that corn should be sold for 16 livres the septier, which is equal to 12 bushels, instead of 22 livres, which was the price before this affair, and was immediately complied with: but for fear of the people taking advantage of this, to raise another tumult, in order to obtain a farther diminution, a regiment of cavalry was sent from the garrison of Carcassonne to this town. All these precautions have only stopped the disturbance, but not the cause. There have been the same disorders at Montpellier.
