Clever Device to Destroy Liquor Fails to Work
BELLINGHAM, Wash., Sept. 21.-
Members of Sheriff Callahan's and Nick Rust's police officers recently arrested Francis D'Aprile, owner and proprietor of the grocery store on the lower floor of the U. S. Hotel building, 700 West Holly street, on a charge of illegal possession of intoxicating liquor. D'Aprile was taken to the county jail, where he furnished $500 bail and will appear at the convenience of the superior or justice court judges.
Recounting the incidents leading up to the arrest of D'Aprile, a police officer this morning said officers encountered a clever device for the destruction of booze in just such emergencies as that of last week-only the officer said, it failed to work.
On the entrance of the officers to D'Aprile's store, the proprietor was shown the search warrant carried by the officers. A "shake down" of the erstwhile grocery store was then started by the officers. D'Aprile backed into a corner of the store and there calmly watched the officers.
It was not until a member of the police force started toward the door opening from the store room to the basement, that D'Aprile showed concern. The officer tried the door before noticing a small latch. As he unfastened the latch and was pushing the door cautiously open, there was a crash as of something falling. Pushing the door clear, the officer saw on the landing at the top of the stairs, leading to the basement, several bottles, one of which was sitting upright and containing moonshine whiskey. None of the bottles were corked.
