Full Text

Street Car Axle Broke.

One of the crowded cars coming from the ball game Saturday afternoon happened an accident. The car had passed over the big bridge over the arroyo and was approaching the curve on Iturbide street where it crosses the small trestle over a smaller arroyo when 'bump, bumpity bump,' she went off the track. Those on the steps jumped and those who were fortunate enough to have seats clambered out to see what was the matter. It was found that the axle was broken and the car assisted by the fans was placed to one side of the track to prevent the traffic being blocked. The accident might have been a serious one if the axle had decided to break as the car was passing over the trestle for even if it had not gone off the trestle the passengers on the steps would have been jarred off or jumped and probably painfully if not seriously injured. If the axle had broken while coming down the hill something would have been doing. But as it was it broke at the right time just as the motorman was slowing down for a curve and no one was even shaken up.
