"The dream of all veterans who ever peered out of a port hole at the Statue of Liberty is to go back to France some day in class," the post commander said. "We want to go back sitting in comfortable steamer chairs, with our feet perched up on the rail and plenty of service. That will even up for the voyage we made packed like sardines in the holds, with hard boiled M.P.'s to pipe 'You can't stand there' every time we parked ourselves on deck.
"We want to travel first class on the railroads we bumped over in box cars," Commander Meadows continued. "We want to drop in at the little cafe where we used to order 'oofs' and pome-de-terres', and to see the cow barn in which we were billeted. We want to go up to the old battle front and show the missis the place where we wiped out a regiment of Prussian Guardsmen single-handed.
"Those of us who didn't get over during the war still are itching to go. Arrangements made by the Legion for transportation to the Paris convention will give us all a chance to make the trip at little cost. Such low rates have been arranged that we will be able to go for little more than many of us spend on a vacation in this country."
The entire trip, incidentals and all, can be made for $300, it is estimated. As a minimum of three weeks will be required for the trip, local Legionaires who have only two weeks vacation annually, are planning to have an entire month next year.
