Full Text

New Orleans, May 20.
The inhabitants, for 20 leagues above and below the city, are much alarmed at the unusual swell of the river, and what adds to the alarm is, that it continues to rise. It is now as high as it has been for ten years past. The probable cause of it is, the number of people who have lately settled on the west margin of the river, and who have (to prevent their lands from being over-flowed) raised banks or Levees that compresses, or confines the water in the great channel, and forces it down this main branch. What appears to strengthen this opinion is, that the river is not unusually high at Natchez.
