The Street Cleaning Bureau of New York city has asked for an appropriation of $1,019,952 to carry on operations during the ensuing fiscal year. This amount is distributed as follows: Salaries of officers, $37,000; pay of sweepers, drivers, and garbage collectors, $651,400; pay of boat and dumping ground hands, $102,320; and $113,332 for stable expenses. The organization of the Bureau consists of one superintendent, one deputy superintendent, four district superintendents, one superintendent of sweeping machines, twenty-two foremen, one superintendent of horse and cart department, twelve inspectors of dumping, one superintendent and five foremen for boats and dumping grounds, five clerks, and three messengers. In street cleaning, arrangements have been made for the employment of 700 sweepers at $10 a week, 300 cart drivers at $2 a day, 250 ash and garbage collectors at $10 per week, and 15 machine drivers at $2 a day. The cost of the outfit is estimated at $421,700. The outfit is to consist of 300 horses, carts, and harness, fifteen sweeping machines with thirty horses, four tug boats, and 100 scows.
