Fund for Boy
Hurt by Train
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa
"Look what the wheels did," the little boy said.
Hard-boiled railroaders in the switch shanty looked, and saw what the wheels had done: Henry Steinhoff, 10, had slipped and fallen under the wheels of a moving freight in the Union Pacific yards and the wheels had severed his left hand and severely injured his right.
Then they looked 1,000 yards down the track to where the accident had happened, and again looked at the brave lad who had walked the endless yards to the switch shanty.
There is no record of a single tear shed by the lad during the trying experience. Just "Look what the wheels did."
BRTers from Lodge 520 decided the boy needed help; Bob Kline local chairman for Burlington in 520, said "He'll have to have an artificial hand so he can get around like other kids. And maybe someday, if the fund grows, Hank can be taught a useful trade."
Yes, 520 railroaders had started a fund for the boy. First contributions came from Lodge 530, which gave $25 and from THE NONPAREIL, local newspaper, which also gave $25.
Other members, with Kline, on the special committee are N. W. Britten, 520 treasurer, M. D. Speer and William Getchman.
The blond-haired, blue eyed boy has two younger brothers and three sisters.
His father works for an Omaha mill.
The newspaper, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, acted as collector for contributions to the fund, and a local bank officer was chosen as trustee.
