Full Text

Extract of a letter from Gloucester. Feb 23.

The master of a Ship arrived at Newnham, from Seville, in Spain, related the following fact :—While he was at Seville, he dined in company with an English Captain who came in the day before from Algiers, and related, that his ship was boarded, off Cape St. Vincent, by an Algerine corsair, to whom he shewed his passport, and gave every necessary evidence to prove that he was a British ship. The Algerine however, was determined not to be convinced, said he was an American and an impostor, and carried him to Algiers.

The day after they came into the road, the villain sent the English Captain and his crew into the slave-market, to be sold. Fortunately, the Captain met with two Algerine merchants, who understood English: to them he stated his pitiable case which they carried instantly to the Dey, in such affecting terms, that, without any ceremony the Algerine Captain was ordered to be brought on shore, and his head was struck off in the middle of the market-place. The Captain and his crew were released, and his ship and property restored.
