Two Singular Facts—Who are the
"Barbarians" Now?
1. The party
which, at the commencement of the war,
professed to be fighting for the restoration
of the Union, is now the only Disunion
Party left in the country; they refuse to
allow the Southern States to come back
into the Union even after these States
have complied with all the demands
made upon them in consequence of their
defeat in war.
2. The party, which, led by Charles
Sumner, claimed the highest civilization,
all the decency, and all the true religion,
and constantly denounced the Southern
people as "barbarians"—as, in fact, the
greatest savages and barbarians on the
continent—is now the only party that ad-
vocates a barbarous policy towards the
South. Unmindful of their high cul-
ture, sinking all "decency," and forget-
ting the noble principles which underlie
"true religion," Sumner, Stevens & Co.,
advocate a policy of extreme punishment
for the South whose refined barbarism
would command the admiration of the
King of Dahomey himself.—Memphis Ar-
gus.
