SHANGHAI, July 17, Summer rains, following close on the spring flood, caused a new menace in Honan province, as Japanese admitted that the thirty mile motor highway between Kaifeng and Laying had been washed out, halting the advance to the westward—from Kaifeng to Chengchow.

The Japanese offensive force, a long ways up the Yangtze has been stalemated at Kiukiang, despite heavy plane and artillery concentration.

Chinese claimed that twenty-five thousand Japanese had been cut off by a counter attack, eight miles east of Kiukiang. The Japanese admitted they had encountered stiff resistance on their march, in that quarter.
