Office of the Colonization Society.
Washington, July 7, 1830.
The Managers of the American Colonization Society have resolved to despatch a vessel, to convey one hundred or more emigrants from Norfolk to Liberia on the 1st of October. It is highly important, that applications for a passage in this expedition, should be duly made to the Secretary of the Society in this City. Applications for a passage may also be made to J. H. Larone, Esq. Baltimore; John M'Phail, Esq. Norfolk, B. Brand, Esq. Richmond; R. H. Toler, Lynchburgh; or to the Secretaries of any of the State or other Auxiliary Societies.
Editors are respectfully requested to copy the above Notice.
"The Colonization Society—Speedy colonization of Pluto's domains by its founders and supporters."
The foregoing was among the regular toasts drank at Columbia, South Carolina, at the late Anniversary of American Independence. The sentiment is worthy the midnight revels of a band of freebooters, rather than the generous citizens of Carolina, celebrating the Declaration of Independence. It is singular such a toast on such an occasion should have been countenanced. The only surviving member of those who signed the instrument which gives celebrity to the 4th of July, is at this time President of the Colonization society, against which the blow is aimed. In plain English, the act reads thus: We are assembled to celebrate the signing the Declaration which asserts our claim to national individuality and sovereignty. Charles Carroll of Carrollton, is now the only one of that Band of Heroes, who staked every thing that was dear to them, on the day of which this is commemorative, he is a supporter of the Colonization Society, an association, formed in the same spirit which produced the separation of these States from Great Britain, an association engaged in asserting the true and permanent interests of our republic, and therefore we wish Charles Carroll, of Carrollton, to the devil.
Who are the supporters of the Colonization Society? Thousands, and tens of thousands of American citizens, in all quarters of the Union, from Maine to Louisiana. Pluto would smile again at such an accession to his gloomy domain. Who are some of the founders of this association: Thomas Jefferson, Bushrod Washington, Henry Clay, Wm. H. Crawford, John Randolph, Andrew Jackson. A majority of the State Legislatures and of the Slave holding States, have expressed their decided approbation of it. The magnanimous Virginia gave birth to the plan now pursued by it, and more than one President of the United States has advocated its claims to generous support. Truly, we are fallen on evil times, if feelings such as this toast evinces against the brightest names among us, can be uttered, on a day which ought to be sacred to patriotism and diffusive charity.
