Full Text

At a largely attended meeting of the members of the Santa Fe bar, held at the office of E. A. Fiske, esq., the chair was occupied by Mr. F. W. Clancy, and the question of Judge Reeves' resignation and the appointment of his successor was discussed at length. As a result of such discussion the appended resolutions were adopted:

JUDGE REEVES' RESIGNATION.

Whereas, Hon. Reuben A. Reeves, district judge of the 1st judicial district, in self-sacrificing devotion to the public interest, is holding the present term of the district court in the county of Santa Fe, at great personal inconvenience and discomfort, while his health is seriously impaired: and

Whereas, The members of the bar now in attendance at said term, in behalf of the litigants having causes upon the docket, feel, with affectionate solicitude, that the intense physical and mental labors incidental to the business of a trial term ought not to be imposed upon our honored brother, if he can be relieved therefrom in a mode agreeable to his high sense of duty: and

Whereas, It has come to the knowledge of the bar that his honor, Judge Reeves, anxious to be released from the cares of judicial office, tendered several months ago, to the president of the United States, his resignation, but withdrew the same at the latter's request and to prevent inconvenience to suitors;

Therefore, we, members of the bar, on behalf of ourselves and our clients, cheerfully waive all claims upon the official time and services of Hon. Reuben A. Reeves at the present term of the said district court, and earnestly advise and request him to refrain from all arduous judicial labors, and dispense with all jury trials and other business the tendency of which may be unduly to tax his health and energies, and, at the utmost, to take up only such matters as can be easily arranged to suit his convenience and the varying condition of his health.

SELECTION OF A SUCCESSOR.

Whereas, The present judge of the 1st judicial district court of New Mexico has tendered his resignation as such, and the probability is that the position will become vacant at the close of the present term of court at the latest, so that it will become necessary that an appointment be made at an early day: therefore be it

Resolved by the bar of the 1st judicial district in called meeting assembled,

That we believe it is due to the bar and people of this district that the judge appointed to preside over the same should be selected from among the members of this bar: and be it further

Resolved, That we deem it inexpedient at this time to name any candidate for that position, but earnestly desire the appointment to be made from among our own members.
