A discovery has been made by which cannon can be discharged by the simple action of compressing the atmospheric air contained in the vent of the gun. By an application of means the most certain and economical that have ever been invented for this purpose, dispensing with the lock and port fire; and which, had it been sooner discovered, would have been a saving to this Government of many thousand dollars within the last ten years. It is by the same gentleman that invented the percussion copper cap, and also the cannon lock and percussion lock, which have been introduced into not only the United States service, but that of Russia, England, and France, and have created a revolution in gunfiring, without, however, yielding any compensation to the inventor, excepting from the Emperor Nicholas, who sent a present in the greatest form, with some flattering offers. While he has been robbed of a remuneration so complete, that his just claim did not witness for him a recompense made in Congress January 7, 1831, in public might have been acquainted with the fact that these inventions of a given American citizen—N.
