Conflicting Reports Relative to the Situation.
It has been announced in Boston that rates on the transcontinental roads will be restored at once, as an agreement to suspend hostilities had been entered into by the Atchison and Southern Pacific companies, but it was officially announced in New York by Vice President Huntington, of the Southern Pacific company, that the war is not over, and that there is no immediate prospect of a settlement. He says that he can not entertain the proposition of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, for two pools, and that this decision ends all pending negotiations for a settlement of the rate war. Agent McBride here says he has received no official information of an advance in rates, and he continues to sell first-class tickets to Missouri River points for $30, giving the purchaser a rebate order for $25, making the net cost of transportation to Omaha or Kansas City $5.
