The Contest and the Democracy.
A friend from Louisiana who holds high position in that State, passed down yesterday on the steamer Belfast, and placed in our hands the subjoined notes. He addressed a large meeting in the Park, and attended the Syracuse convention, and his opportunities for forming correct opinions were of the best character.
When taunted with the boast that Tennessee would cast her vote for Fillmore, he replied "Gov. Johnson lived in that State:"

EDITORS APPEAL:—Having often heard you by the hearing of the ear, I take the pardonable liberty of addressing you a few thoughts touching the present appearance of the political sky. The following States, viz: New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine and New Hampshire are gone beyond doubt for our glorious ticket. The democracy in the above named States are now a unit, and in November next will render material aid in delivering our country from the shackles of Know Nothingism, Fremontism and all the other damnable isms that for the last five months have been going up and down in the land, causing strife, discontent, and, in sundry instances, blood shed itself.
During our visit to the Empire State, it was our good fortune to be present at the union of the hards and softs, which took place at Syracuse. A more complete and glorious union never witnessed, and the two great wings of the New York democracy are now fighting shoulder to shoulder, and breast to breast for the safety of the constitution and the salvation of our blood bought liberties. Unite the democracy of New York, and the power does not exist that can defeat their purposes; this being the case you need entertain to fears what-ever of the result. The other States mentioned know and appreciate the priceless value of our glorious confederacy, and when they go for Fremontism, Know Nothingism, or any other "ism," great nature will grow weary with fatigue, and the old sun will become dim with age.
Upon the broad platform of our tried principles, these States will come forth with overwhelming strength, and crushing on the old serpent of fanaticism to the earth, will higher than ever the standard of American liberty. Know Nothingism, in the north is well nigh run its course. A majority of its members are now going over to Fremont, as the most available mode whereby to cripple the movements of our party. Poor Fillmore will retire from the race without a single trophy with which to deck his ambitious brow. In a word, the sectional Fillmore men in the north will go for Fremont, while the Union-loving members of the shattered party will support Mr. Buchanan, almost to a man. This being the case, how could Fillmore men act in the south? To our mind the way is perfectly plain, and the path of duty so distinct, that the fool or a wayfaring man cannot consist go wrong. That the Fremont party will make formidable demonstrations to carry out their damnable designs, is a proposition that no one questions. This being the case, should not southern men present an unbroken front to repel the monster by casting the entire vote of the south for James Buchanan, the constitution and the Union. This is a serious question which I hope every southern man will ponder well, and resolve to act in the premises regardless of party prejudices.
By the way, Messrs. Editors, it becomes my duty to inform you that the Know Nothings of the north are claiming your State by a large majority. It would amuse a Tennessean to stand in the St. Nicholas and listen to the boasters as they claim Tennessee by at least one thousand. As far as we are concerned we met the slander promptly, and have taken the liberty to pledge Tennessee, together with every southern State, for the only national party now in existence. These presumptuous boasters even flatter themselves that they can carry Louisiana, a State that a few months since repudiated in thundering tones their misbegotten and half digested dogmas. Louisiana will give Buchanan by a large majority, and hope to see the south accompany our candidate to Mason and Dixon's line with just one hundred and twenty electoral votes. Doubtless every patriot within the borders of your State will unite to witness the same happy result. What we have written, Messrs. Editors, is the plain truth of the matter, which time will demonstrate to a fraction.
