BURGLARY.

About one o'clock yesterday morning, Alderman Badger heard a noise at the back window of his dwelling, which he at first supposed was caused by his cat; the noise however increasing, he threw open the sash of the back window of the second story, but could see nothing. He went to bed, and again heard the noise, got up and passed into the front room, threw open the sash, and called to the watchman, who at that time was passing along Sixth street, directed him to go to the back part of his house, and he would meet him there; the watchman proceeded to the place, and found that the shutter of the back window had been bored with a large auger in three different places. Hearing a person in the adjoining yard, the watchman pursued him; the fellow jumped over the fences from yard to yard, until he came to the one in the rear of the house occupied by Mrs. Physick, where finding himself so closely pursued by the watchman that he could proceed no further this way, he changed his course and ran with such force against the kitchen door that it burst open and he entered the house.

Alderman Badger went round to the front door of Mrs. Physick's house and alarmed the family: the door was opened, the magistrate admitted, and on proceeding into the back room, perceived the thief running hastily into the front parlor, pursued him, and by this time the watchman had made his way up stairs. The thief finding his retreat cut off from the door, ran with great force against one of the front windows, broke through lights of glass, bent the bolt and bursted the shutters nearly open. He was at length with great difficulty apprehended by the alderman and watchman, and discovered to be a very stout black fellow, whom alderman Badger had in the course of his official duties offended, and who, it is supposed, was breaking into the house for the purpose of taking his revenge. In the course of yesterday morning, he was brought up before the Mayor, and committed to answer for his offences at the next court of Oyer and Terminer.
