MARTIN VAN BUREN.
It is known to our readers that a factious Senate attempted to destroy this gentleman's political standing, several years ago. His rejection by the Senate, was an insult which the Democracy of the country could not brook. They saw plainly, that he had fallen a victim to the revengeful spirit which pervaded the breast of a few political intriguers; and they signally rebuked that corrupt act, by placing him in his present elevated station. But the affections of the People for his faithful public servant, instead of silencing his enemies, only tended to increase their acrimony. For the last four years he has been the object of the most unsparing abuse. The opposition papers from Maine to Louisiana have been groaning under the weight of their calumnies. His speeches have been misrepresented—his conversations distorted— and his person caricatured. Contrary to our expectations, the bold invectives of his enemies have prejudiced a few republicans against him, but it is gratifying to reflect, that the great body of the People still cling to him as fondly as ever. He is in our estimation the strongest man in our ranks, and the only one upon whom the democrats can unite, with any prospect of success. But, notwithstanding our predilection for Van Buren, if the republican convention should make any other selection, we will bow with deference to its decision. The principles which we follow, can only be upheld by the closest union; and our Union can only be preserved by a voluntary surrender of our individual preference.
