HERE YOU HAVE IT!
The designs of the Gov. Paine class of protectionists begin to develope themselves; see this:
At a Tariff convention recently held in Boston, it was resolved that "the imposition of a duty upon the raw material, is a tax upon the manufacturer."-New Haven Reg
Exactly! exactly! Here you have the length and breath of the Hard cider protection. We have contended from the outset for PROTECTION to ALL—FAVORS to NONE. We have told the farmers continually, that this scheme of protection that was devising by the Cidercrats, was for their ruin, and now it begins to appear that we were right about the matter.
The federal papers told us that if manufactures were protected, the farmer would get more for his wool. We said that the speculators would manage the matter, so as to purchase the raw material at the LOWEST POSSIBLE PRICE, WHILE THEIR PROTECTION WOULD ENABLE THEM TO COMMAND AN INCREASED PRICE FOR THEIR FABRICS. How strikingly is this verified, almost in a day! At one of their largest protection conventions, these speculators resolve that "the imposition of a duty upon the raw material is a tax upon THEM!" When will the farmers of Vermont, look into this thing they call whiggery?
