The editor of the Middlebury Free Press affects to be so amazingly shocked at the few remarks we made last week about Gen. Martin Flint, the great "Randolph Orator," that one would be led to think from the length and gravity of his comments thereon, that he meditated making some great man out of this bombastic political weather-cock. But he will probably find himself as much mistaken as when he undertook to make a great man of himself.
The Free Press editor, among other awful things, says- "The Herald, and Vermont Watchman have been foremost since the State Convention of Feb. 1825, in assuming anti-masonic airs, and traducing all those antimas ons, who did not choose their political fellowship, as deserters and apostates."
On this point we speak only for ourselves It is true that we desired no fellowship with those apostates who deserted their party and abandoned their principles, and free to denounce them as apostates. We have no misgivings on this score. We contended that they were traitors to their country's best interests, and we now so consider them The editor of the Free Press may talk about his "Van Buren Democracy," his "Democratic Antimasons," and the purity and patriotism of his Flints, his Pettibones, his Cobbs, his Edgertons, his Palmers, &c. until he is as gray as a goose and he never will obtain for them any confidence with the gallant Green Mountain Boys. Of all the characters in this degenerate world, the traitor is the most detested by them And how strange it is that one, who lays so much claim to intelligence and sagacity, as the editor of the F. Press, can never learn any thing from experience.
We have neither time nor inclination to animadvert further upon this senseless production of the F. Press-and we are aware that our readers are rather adverse to the occupancy of our paper with such kind of useless sparrings about small affairs!
