Congress.

Monday, January 26.—Senate.—The bill establishing a naval depot at Brunswick, Ga., and appropriating $200,000 for the same, was passed.

House.—Mr. Chester was brought to the bar to give reasons for his absence, when summoned before the investigating committee. His reasons being satisfactory, he was discharged from custody.

The bill to increase the pay of the officers of the army, was passed.

Tuesday.—Senate.—The Indian appropriation bill was debated.

House.—Mr. Campbell, of Ohio, from the Committee on Ways and Means, reported an amended Tariff bill, which, he stated, will reduce the revenue $14,000,000.

A bill giving each branch of Congress the control of its contingent fund, was debated without action.

The subject of the submarine telegraph was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

Wednesday.—Congress met and adjourned without transacting any business.

Thursday.—Senate.—The death of Mr. Brooks was announced by Messrs. Evans, Hunter and Toombs.

House.—The death of Mr. Brooks was announced by Messrs. Keitt, Quitman, Campbell of Ohio, Bingham and Savage. The last named incidentally justified his attack on Sumner, which was evidently distasteful to his listeners.

The usual resolutions were adopted, and both houses adjourned.

The members then formed in procession and followed the body of Mr. Brooks, which had been brought to the Capitol, to the Congressional Burying Ground.

Friday.—Nothing important in either House.

Saturday.—Ditto.
