Extract of a letter from Vienna, March 5.
On the 9th of February the Emperor's manifesto was sent to the several Bashaws stationed towards the frontiers; that of Belgrade received it with great composure, entertained the officer who brought it with coffee and tobacco, and presented him with a very fine pair of Turkish pistols. That very day the Imperialists entered the Ottoman territories and began hostilities. Drehick, old and new Orsova, Dubitza, and some other small forts on the frontiers, were taken, partly without resistance, and partly with more or less considerable loss. They had some officers and men killed, and 360 men, with six more officers, wounded before Dubitza, in the first unhappy assault, occasioned by the false report of a treacherous spy, who assured the Austrian commanding officer, that the garrison at Dubitza was very small and careless, and that the place might be taken at night without any loss. The commander relying on this report, advanced with 2000 Croats; but met with such a warm reception from the enemy, that not a man would have escaped, had not the commander prevailed on them to retire, until he could get some artillery. Old Gradiska was quite changed into a heap of stones before the Turks left it. The Emperor, it seems, is determined not to besiege Belgrade, but to blockade it. A German mile or two above the fortress a body of Imperialists have crossed the Sava, and are posted on the opposite shore; at the same time another body is marched towards Paschowa, another Turkish fortress, which they intend to besiege, in order to pass the Danube, and join the body which is to advance from Savia; so that Belgrade, by this means, must entirely be cut off.
