LOS ANGELES. Aug. 3. (UP)—The federal government is heeding a plea to help California with its migratory worker problem, but no help will be forthcoming in time to stave off the state's relief fund crisis, Gov. Culbert Olson said today.
Unless the legislature votes more money, SRA rolls will be cut about in half October 1. he said.
Olson, in a press conference, praised President Roosevelt's repudiation of U. S. Senator Hiram Johnson as a Democratic candidate for re-election.
The governor said he asked the Federal Work Projects administration to expand its California program in order to help relieve the state's approaching shortage of relief funds.
"I based my request upon the serious migratory worker influx into California, with its consequent aggravation of our relief problem," he said. "I explained to federal authorities that theirs is rightfully the responsibility for extending relief to the migratory needy flooding our state.
"While I have had an encouraging reaction from Washington, I have little hope that any federal emergency aid sufficient to materially relieve our crisis will be forthcoming in time.
The SRA can probably carry on pretty well through September, but after that, God only knows what we will be able to do. I have scheduled their reconvening for December 2. and nothing has been said about any session earlier than that."
