The Little Norwegian tells us what he knows about: wheat--Sees a funeral and eschews all politics--Thinks the charmed circle is broken and don't care who beats.
BELLE CREEK, SEPT. 7th, 1874
Editor Grange Advance:
DEAR SIR: Threshing is getting along nicely, on account of the dry season. The wheat does not through out the country turn out as well as first reported. The cause of the first report not being reliable, was that a report from a certain neighborhood was made that the yield was as good this year as before. They based their judgment on the yield of their own farm, and were right in their statements so far, but they had two advantages, namely: new ground, and old Canada Club, among some called Scotch Fife; I claim that it is here, all the same kind of wheat.
The Odessa is what is going to raise weeds, and give a yield of puny shriveled wheat. I pronounce the Odessa wheat a pest almost equal to the grasshoppers of the West:
The other day while myself and family were eating breakfast I discovered through the windows that a procession of teams, wagons, and men all dressed in black, were on the way for Red Wing. Through the surprise my wife asked me what it meant, and what it could be? Without thinking I remarked that I thought it was a funeral. The next day I was at Hader, and on my return I met the same body of men when I asked of them who was dead. "Bob Deakin," was the reply. Then I found out that it was not a bodily death but a political one. They may say just what they please about Deakin. I think that they will have some fault to find with his successors in office, but inasmuch as the Republican party has professed to make a "charge" upon the old Republican County Ring, which has been in power for the last fourteen years, and then have only "charged" upon Hon. Robert Deakin without attempting to fire at any one of the remaining ring is a little surprising.
However we see that the ring is broken and doubts exist in the minds of the people whether the ring in this County will ever be united again. Hence I want to be understood that I don't intend to interfere with either of the tickets, as the public well understand, and know that it is three years this fall since I voted at any State or County election. That is what you must all acknowledge for the
