Extract of a letter from Stoney Point, July 2, 1779.
Yesterday Mr. Washington, with several other rebel officers, were reconnoitering our post attended with about 500 men, 13 of which number chose to come in to us in the course of the day, by whom we learn, that the report among them is, that an attack on the post is intended. I have not a doubt that it will prove a very serious affair to them.
[Mr. Rivington, The very serious affair of Stoney point is over, and 500 of your unconquerable heroes, marched to Mr. Washington's camp.]
