Lessons from their Southern Brethren.
It will be remembered that Beauregard issued a general order requiring his soldiers to call all Union soldiers and friends of the Union "Abolitionists" That order is in force in Iowa, and the Copperhead fraternity are very zealous in their obedience to this politico-military pronunciamento of their Southern chief.
The massacre of Blunt's staff and body guard, the dispatches inform us, was perpetrated by rebels wearing the uniform of the United States. In this treacherous strategy the Copperheads are also apt scholars of their Southern brethren, and these peace sneaks put on the uniform of loyal citizens, head their tickets with Union and liberty, and proclaim themselves for the Union and the war. In this they are but imitating the fraud and treachery of Quantrell's guerrillas, and are, in truth, no more loyal than they. Let all true patriots beware of the treacherous frauds of these scamps, who oppose their Government because it confiscates the property of traitors and enlists their slaves to fight for the country. Their real sympathies are with Beauregard and Quantrel, and they imitate them by assuming loyal color, the more successfully to accomplish their hellish purposes.
