Soon afterwards, they were attacked by two British frigates. The frigate was taken, 2 of the gun boats were blown up, 5 were sunk, and 3 driven on shore, and the fort was silenced. The British ships were the Arethusa and Anson. The former had 6 men killed and 20 wounded--the latter none. The Pomona's captain was killed. It was supposed 200 Spaniards were destroyed in the action. The Spanish frigate stood the fire of the English only 15 minutes.
Previous to the action a great deal of money was landed from her; but much it is said, remained on board. Some say half a million of dollars. When the Pomona was taken, there was an 80 gun ship at Havanna; but her top-masts being struck, she could not be got ready for sea till the next day.
