LEXINGTON:
Wednesday, November 22.
The wars on the continent of Europe (says a French paper) are for the present drawing to a close. Whether a permanent peace (which humanity wishes and philosophy prescribes) will take place, is a problem of difficult solution. It is rather to be presumed, that while a remnant of monarchy, or the monarchical principle, exists among mankind, the miserable system of blood and warfare will prevail in an exact ratio to the continuance of that absurd scheme of governing mankind. It remains to be seen, whether the efficacy of what is called a Republican Revolution, tending to the harmonization of man, will have at least, a preponderancy in the opposite scale. With us, who suffer ourselves to think, it is generally agreed, that the world is become old enough to be wise, and that mankind were not brought upon the stage of existence, to butcher each other for partial interests—to get the better of these things, the Republican principle of humanity and equality, will perhaps gradually prevail, through the influence of liberal education, truly such; and not an education of deception and fraud, which engenders aristocracy, and all that is degrading to man.
