TO THE POLLS!
The duty of the day is well understood by Maine republicans. It is to deposit in the ballot box, as early in the day as possible, the full and complete republican vote of the State, rounded out in full measure in every city, town and plantation, and to see that it is fairly counted, declared and recorded.
The argument is closed; there only remains the casting and counting of the vote which will make known whether Blaine or Cleveland will be the next President of the United States. In this privilege and duty we join to-day.
We have full faith that the decision will be the election of James G. Blaine to the Presidency. All signs point that way. The canvass shows that he will have a majority in every Northern State, and be elected. In the South there is some hope that Blaine will carry one or two States. But they will not be needed to elect the republican candidates. The North will stand by its principles and their honored representative upon the national ticket, as they stood by Lincoln, Grant, Hayes and Garfield.
A great republican victory is just before us. It is in the air. It can be read in men's faces. Let every republican, every man of whatever party or religious creed he may be, or from whatever nationality he may have sprung, who desires the election of Blaine for President join the great procession of those who will vote for him to-day.
Vote early
Watch the polls
Guard against fraud
Show your interest by helping at the polls.
Secure every honest vote.
Help the sick and feeble to deposit their ballots
Give every energy to the work while the day lasts
Spare no effort to secure the last vote that can be secured. Maine must roll up 25,000 majority for Blaine and Logan to-day.
Maine is destined to have the next President of the United States, and for such an honor and with such a candidate as Blaine, the people of this State ought to strain every nerve and roll up a majority that will show how James G. Blaine is appreciated at home.
Hon. C. A. Boutelle, on Sunday evening telegraphed his paper, the Bangor Whig and Courier, the following from New York, where he has been taking an active part in the campaign: "The close of an almost unprecedentedly exciting canvass finds the republicans earnestly confident of a great victory for Blaine and Logan, with New York State conspicuously in the republican line. Our friends are full of faith that New York will give Blaine a heavy majority, and while Cleveland leaders continue to claim the State, conservative democrats expect Blaine to carry it decisively. New Jersey can only be kept out of the republican column by the most lavish use of democratic money, and it is not believed that the State can be kept from Mr. Blaine by all the efforts of the enemy. The news from Indiana is inspiring, Connecticut is thoroughly aroused, and the prospect is that Blaine and Logan will carry every Northern State, with a chance that republican lightning may strike in some localities in the present Solid South. The outlook is most auspicious and cheering all along the line."
The city of Augusta ought to roll up a great vote for James G. Blaine to-day. It will be a great thing to have the next President hail from Augusta in the State of Maine.
Many old democrats will cast their votes for Blaine, and they will always remember the act with pride and pleasure.
Irish-Americans, give your votes for Blaine, who will see that you have your rights at home and abroad.
Workingmen, vote for Blaine and protection to workingmen.
