Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 25.—Rumors are in circulation here of a plan for the amalgamation of the United Mine Workers of America and the Western Federation of Miners, and the election of William D. Haywood, secretary of the latter organization, to the presidency of the combined organization. John Mitchell, whose term as president of the United Mine Workers will expire on April 1 next, has announced that he will not be a candidate for re-election, owing to ill health. The report of the merger and the election of Haywood is discredited by officials of the United Mine Workers, who declare that Congressman Thomas D. Nicholls, of Scranton, Pa., will probably be Mitchell's successor.
