The Sunday Law
Refused Them
by the Authorities-
Trial of Thirteen
Policemen To-night.

Bridgeport, June 30.-The county commissioners held an important session this afternoon and refused to grant licenses to men who have recently been convicted of violating the Sunday liquor law, and several whose places did not bear the best of reputations. It is just the step the righteous people of this city have been looking for for the past year. Among those who applied for a license without success were: Frank Moran, the proprietor of the notorious "Drum," Victor H. Case, the proprietor of a hotel on Bank street, and five or six other saloon keepers, who each year, as the weather gets warm, run concert gardens in connection with their saloons. The commissioners stated positively that they would grant a license to no one who had a concert garden attached to his saloon. Thirteen policemen are just now in hot water, owing to their action in testifying before the commissioners some time that the place run by Case was eminently respectable and that, in their opinions. Case was a man fit to be given a license. When Chief Rylands heard of this he immediately preferred charges against the thirteen members, several of whom are the oldest men on the force. They were to have been tried last week, but owing to the illness of Commissioner Bishop the cases were postponed until to-morrow night. when the matter will be fully ventilated. To-night Moran's license ran out and Chief Rylands said he would not grant a reissuance and if the concert garden was opened Moran would be arrested. By the determined action of the commissioners at least six disreputable resorts are weeded out, and the unanimous cry of the majority of the people is that the good work continue.
