HARTFORD, Saturday Afternoon, May 8.
After my last letter closed, the House received a communication from the Governor in regard to the National Fast, which was referred to a joint committee.
Committee on education reported an act in addition to an act on Schools, to facilitate the calling of district meetings in new districts. It was read a third time, and passed without opposition. Report from Committee on military returns, read and accepted. Report of the Savings Society of the city of Hartford, read and accepted. Report of the Savings Society of Norwich, read and accepted.— These reports represent the Societies in a favorable condition. A bill for an Act to change laws in regard to punishment of death, &c. read twice and referred. Report from the Directors of State Prison, giving a favorable account of that institution, read and accepted. Letter from Capt. Pilsbury, recommending the building of an Asylum for insane poor- read and referred to committee on insane poor. Report from Committee on death of President Harrison, reported in favor of the observance of the National Fast, as recommended by President Tyler and Governor Ellsworth, and for that purpose the House passed a resolution to adjourn from Thursday next till the Tuesday following. Resolution to print 500 copies of the report of the Directors of State Prison, with accompanying documents, passed. Resolution granting the use of the Hall for a lecture before the Connecticut Historical Society, passed.
House adjourned until 10 o'clock Monday.
